GJA condemn assault on Journalist

Kumasi, Nov.8, GNA – The Ashanti Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the assault on Mr Sampson Nyamekye, a reporter of Kumasi-based Hello FM describing it as unbelievable and brutish.

A statement issued in Kumasi on Tuesday and signed by Mr Samuel Ennin, the Regional Chairman of the association regretted that while the Government under President John Agyekum Kufuor had been tolerant with the media following the repeal of the criminal libel law, some people by virtue of their relationship with the Government had become arrogant. It said “Mr Kwasi Boadu’s attack on a defenceless reporter is a clear display of his thinking that he is above the law.”

The statement said, “actions of such nature do not only taint the Government’s name but breed irresponsibility and arrogance in the society.”

It appealed to the police to arrest and prosecute Mr Boadu “because he is not above the law.”

The statement advised media practitioners in the region to abide by the ethics of their profession instead of publishing or broadcasting unsubstantiated stories on personalities for selfish gains.
