Give jobs to local publishing industry

Kumasi, Sept. 10, GNA – Professor Daniel Buor, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Valley View University in Accra, has urged the Government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to award more contracts to support Ghana Book Publishers Association to enable it to survive.

He explained that this could create more jobs and help to grow the nation’s economy.

Prof. Buor was speaking during the inauguration of the Ghana Book Publishers Association (GBPA, Northern Sector office, at the Department of Publishing Studies in Kumasi on Wednesday.

The programme, which had the theme, 93Books: Indispensable tools for every scholar”, brought together Book Publishers and all other stakeholders in the book industry across the country.

He called on the Executives of the Association to be proactive and innovative by moving within the current streams of technology and strengthen their networks locally and internationally to ensure sustainability.

The VC called on the government to come out with measures to forestall the breeding of 91negative’ literature such as pornographic material that has the potential to corrupt society.

Prof. Buor urged the Publishers to make knowledge adaptable to Ghanaians to pave way for development

Mrs Lucy Ry-Kottoh, Head, Department of Publishing Studies, in an address, said the Northern Sector branch of the GBPA would deepen the relationship between academia and industry to support the development of the book industry.

She called on the public sector to accept students for internship training.

Mr Asare Konadu Yamoah, President of GBPA in his address, commended the Department of Publishing Studies (DPS) for their support towards training the right professionals needed by the industry.
