A security expert David Agbee has said Interior minister Mark Woyongo may have been moved from the ministry in the latest ministerial reshuffle as a result of his controversial remarks regarding the stay of the former Guantanamo Bay inmates in Ghana.
Woyongo in the heat of the controversy regarding government’s decision to provide humanitarian assistance to the two former inmates told the media he was not privy to the details that led to their coming.
“I don’t know the details for their being here. I wasn’t privy to the discussions but maybe that can be found from National Security. They are expected to comport themselves, not to do anything untoward and I am sure they will be briefed on what to do and what not to do,” he said. The disclosure by the former Defense minister sparked new waves of agitations on the sort of due process that was done before the cleared terror suspects arrived in Ghana.
Subsequently, President John Mahama has in his latest ministerial reshuffle moved Mr. Woyongo from the Interior ministry to the Presidency.
Commenting on the development, the Executive Director of the Ghana Institute of Governance and Security told Nii Arday Clegg on the Morning Starr Tuesday that the comments by the minister may have provoked the President.
“…His level of communication and posture wasn’t good as a minister of Interior, especially that he came out publicly to say that he wasn’t privy to some of the discussions that went on regarding the GITMO guys.
“I think that he didn’t conduct himself well. He couldn’t justify his inclusion as far as the government and decisions are concerned,” he stated.
