Girl, 2, drowns in Volta lake boat accident

A two-year-old girl has been confirmed dead following a boat accident on the Volta Lake on Wednesday.

Reports say a commercial boat carrying 20 people from Afram-plains in the Kwahu-North district to Gemeni in South Dayi of the Volta region capsized after a heavy windstorm on the lake.

The Kpando Municipal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ernest Dzegblah who confirmed the incident to Starr News’ Volta regional correspondent, Lambert Atsivor, said the 19 other people on the boat were rescued and are responding to treatment at the Anfoega Catholic Hospital.

“There was a heavy storm that capsized the boat. All the people were retrieved, except a little girl of two who was not retrieved”.

He also disclosed that majority of the passengers aboard the boat were not wearing life jackets.
