Kanvilli (N/R), July 26, GNA – The Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT) is to disburse 60,000 Euros to women groups in its operational areas under its Gender Promotion Programme.
The Oikonomos Foundation, a Dutch NGO, is funding the three-year project, which is under the Development Assistance Training Programme of GILLBT.
Mr. Sylvester Kwame Nkrumah, Associate Director for Language Projects announced this when he presented a report at the 43rd Annual General Meeting of the Institute at Kanvilli near Tamale on Monday. The Gender Promotion Programme is a micro credit scheme that seeks to train poor women who are unable to source loans from the traditional sources because they are not able to meet the criteria and conditions set.
It is expected that 1,440 women would have benefited from the facility by the end of the three-year programme.
Mr. Nkrumah announced that the programme was impacting positively on the lives of women, as most of them were able to pay school fees and hospitals bills for their children out of the profits they had made. For instance, he said, at the Walewale project, Madam Salamatu Sumani who sells “Kulikuli” (fried groundnut paste), was able to pay about 560,000 cedis for her daughter to enroll at the Nalerigu Senior Secondary School to re-sit the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE).
