GHS caution the public on possible outbreak of Cholera

Accra, May 16, GNA – The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Monday called on the general public to observe and ensure proper environmental sanitation and good personal hygiene, to prevent the outbreak and spread of cholera with the onset of the rainy season.

It advised that all foods and water should be covered to prevent them from flies while fresh fruits and vegetables as well as hands should be washed thoroughly with soap before eating.

A statement signed by Dr Irene Agyepong, Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services (GHS), advised that food should be eaten hot. The statement said since cholera was endemic in the Region, it was expected that some incidence of cholera might occur, therefore, it was important to take precautionary measures to minimize its occurrence. It advised the public to immediately administer Oral Dehydration Salt (ORS) in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting and rush to the victim to the nearest health facility and gave the assurance that all health facilities in the Region had been adequately equipped to manage cholera cases.
