GHC50,000 as filing fee too high – UFP

Presidential candidate for the United Front Party (UFP), Dr. Agyenim Boateng has slated the Electoral Commission (EC) for pegging the filing fee for presidential candidates at Ghc50,000 cedis and that of parliamentary candidates at Ghc10,000 cedis.

The EC has fixed candidates’ filing fee for presidential candidates at GHc50,000 and parliamentary candidates at GHc10, 000. This was announced at an Inter-Party Advisory Commission (IPAC) meeting held on Thursday in Accra.

But speaking in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the presidential candidate said the figure is astronomical.

He explained that presidential candidates in the 2012 elections paid Ghc10,000 cedis hence it is extremely high to compel them to pay Ghc50,000 cedis this election year.

He was of the view that the EC should have engaged with the political parties before coming out with the new figure.

Nominations will be opened on Tuesday, September 13 and close on September 28 and 29. Responding to the date announced, he said it is in a rush and has therefore asked the EC to reverse the decision.

According to him, he will contest the presidential race, but the number of his parliamentary candidates may reduce due to the figure.
