GHC18 million students’ hostel at CUCG takes off

Most Reverend Bishop Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of Sunyani on Wednesday cut the sod for the construction of an GH¢18 million students’ hostel for the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG), at Fiapre near Sunyani.

The project is expected to ease the accommodation problems of the students as well as bringing them together on campus for effective teaching and learning.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is funding the project, which would contain an internet café, bookshop, gymnasium, canteen and cafeteria. It is expected to be completed in 48 months.

Bishop Gyamfi expressed gratitude to the student body for “their bold initiative”, saying, the gesture had really actualized one of the objectives of the founding fathers of the University College.

He urged the students to continue to the exhibit such selfless and love attitudes whilst they strive to achieve academic excellence.

“As you undertake this project, lots of pro-active discussions and advice will go on. I entreat you not to think of what you will gain but what you can give to the school to help create a better and lovely atmosphere within our country, our school and our church,” he added.

Professor James Ephraim Hawkins, Vice Chancellor of CUCG congratulated the executives of the SRC for their foresight.

“Even though you will not benefit from this project, you have shown the uniqueness of taught, and I entreat you to be worthy ambassadors and stand out as uniquely unique products wherever you will find yourselves in future,” he said.

Ms Rosemida Otoo, SRC President, expressed satisfaction that, their dream of bringing all students on campus for effective education, as well as relieving them of huge accommodation fees of landlords was becoming a reality.

The College’s SRC week celebration for this year was launched with a call on the students to lend support for a successful event by avoiding excessive alcohol intake, illicit drugs, sexual promiscuity and other immoral activities.**
