The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHAPOHA) has expressed support for the long-term national development plan of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) that would ensure continuity in governance and promote socio-economic development.
Mr Richard Anomoo, Director General of GHAPOHA, said the efforts of the Commission would promote development of all sectors in the country including the ports and harbour operations.
He said this on Tuesday during a stakeholder meeting of the Commission with members of GHAPOHA- including Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, Akosombo Port, Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), Ghana Revenue Authority, and the Tema Traditional Council.
Mr Anomoo urged the Commission to consider the connectivity of the railway system to boost activities at the ports, the decongestion of the port, as well as provision of adequate infrastructure to generate more revenue.
The stakeholders also urged the Commission to deepen their consultation to ensure that the plan reflects the views of all.
Dr Nii Moi Thompson, Director General of NDPC, said the ultimate goal of the development plan is to ensure social and economic transformation of the country by adopting a scientific approach in resolving issues militating against the development effort.
He assured the stakeholders of the Commission’s effort to solicit inputs through the consultative forums to ensure that the plan conforms to contemporary trends.
Commodore Mark Yawson of the Ghana Navy appealed to the Commission to consider the incorporation of the activities of the naval system in the plan and other foreign operational based systems to increase security on Ghanaian waters.
Nii K. Agetey of the Tema Traditional Council pledged support for the plan, adding that he was willing to give out more lands for the expansion of the port.
A representative from the GSA said it is also very important to incorporate quick systems for the movement of shipping goods as well as capacity building for all players, hence the need for the Commission to also consider that in the plan.
