Northern Regional Minister, Abdullah Abubakari, has urged the country’s security agencies to always act swiftly to avert circumstances that have the potential to degenerate into conflict.
He said it was crucial that they do so with professionalism and without fear or favour, especially in cases where political actors are involved.
Addressing a military delegation in Tamale during a courtesy call on him by the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Obed Akwah, the minister observed the military’s fear of being tagged by the public often delays in finding lasting solution to conflicts and crimes in the area.
He said though the Northern Region is noted to be notorious, but was happy efforts by the military and other security agencies often help in maintaining the security of the people in the area.
“Our region as you know has been noted to be notorious but thankfully your men here together with other security agencies have been able to live to expectation. We can largely say that the relative peace we enjoy today is as a result of the very good collaboration,” Mr Abubarkar said.
He was hopeful that if the security agencies assumed their constitutional mandate of protecting individuals from conflict, and exercise their duties with no favour, the Northern Region will witness absolute peace. Mr Abubarkar, who is also the Chairman of the Northern Regional Security Committee, assured the people and the security agencies that he was committed to peace in the region not just as a matter of responsibility but also as a religion.
He thus refuted claims that he was arming some people in the area with AK47 guns to cause trouble.
The minister also urged the media to be circumspect with their commentaries and reportage, especially as we go into elections in December noting the media can ensure the stabilisation of peace or otherwise. He asked that media professionals do not put their interest above professionalism or allow any politician to dictate to or manipulate them.
The Chief of Army Staff Major General Akwah reiterated the preparedness of the military to deal with any incident, especially as Ghana nears the 2016 general election, noting it is important “to ensure peace reign for development to take place” in the region.
