Tarkwa (W/R), Sept 22, GNA – Dr. Kwaku Osafo, a leading member of Patriots, a pressure group linked to the Convention People Party has described the contribution of mining in national economy as insignificant.
He said this at a meeting of CPP supporters at Tarkwa. He said Ghanaians abroad injected about five billion dollars last year into the economy through remittances and other means. Comparatively, Ghana generates about 986 million dollars from gold and out of this only 46 million, representing five per cent, is kept in the country, he said.
Dr. Osafo said, revenue from export and sale of bush meat gave Ghana 360 million Dollars within the same period and that amount was retained in the economy.
He said the Patriots are a formidable group with the aim of strengthening the CPP at the grassroots and not to divide its front. Professor E. A. Afari, a leading member of the Patriots, said Dr. Nkrumah laid down his life for the independence of Ghana and entire Africa.
He said Nkrumah is dead, but his ideas and legacies remained for the benefit of everybody.
Prof Afari pleaded with the supporters of the party to help with their strength and wealth to keep the mantle of the CPP burning. Mr Samuel Gordon Etroo, Western Regional branch chairman of CPP, regretted that even though Ghana is an agriculture country, it cannot produce food to feed its 20 million people.
Dr. Kofi Baako, an engineer, said the problem with Ghana is mismanagement of its natural resources and it could be reversed with people with selfless commitment to the service of Ghana. 22 Sept. 06
