Ghana’s Parliament still relevant despite flaws – Expert

Parliament of Ghana still remains relevant in the current democratic dispensation despite attacks from some section of the public to the effect that members have failed to deliver on their mandate and therefore must be scrapped off entirely from the system.

‘I do not think and support the fact Parliament of Ghana has lost its usefulness only in its twenty-fourth year and for that matter the people within are not worth the material to be there”, Governance Expert and Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. B.B.B Bingab contends.

“Parliament is an institution that assembles all manner of professionals with the knowledge and skill all round”, the University lecturer pointed out on Kumasi-based Otec FM.

Social commentator and economist, Sidney Casley Hayford over the week took a swipe at parliamentarians over the weekend describing them as lazy people who do not deserve to represent the people.

“Africans have serious brain problems, we don’t have enough clear thinkers, we have thinkers but we don’t have clear thinkers”, he was quoted as saying.

Commenting on what appears to be an attack on the legislature, Dr. B.B Bingab disagrees spelling out what bars one from becoming a lawmaker.

“If you look at our Constitution the only thing that can limit someone from becoming a parliamentarian is when one is not of the age 21. …the person is not of a sound mind and not a Ghanaian”, Dr. Bingab revealed.
