Ghana’s over-dependence on IMF is an insult – Eva Lokko

2012 Running mate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Eva Lokko has called on the Mahama government to instill fiscal discipline in the nation.

Making her submissions at the roundtable discussion on public financial management organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Eva Lokko admonished policy makers in the country for not complying with the laid-down fiscal rules governing the country.

According to her, the legislators have woefully failed to formulate proper fiscal policies to improve the economy.

Speaking at the IEA conference in Accra on Tuesday, Madam Lokko was particularly disappointed that Ghana has been seeking solace in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help cushion the fiscal fabric of the country.

“When are we going to get up as Ghanaians and get together and stop the blame game? The blame game has not gotten us anywhere…What are we doing? It is time for us, yes, to have rules and regulations but before that, there’s the need for rational education in terms of feeling like true citizens of our country and believing that this country matters to us…We have to look at the people.”

Madam Lokko further told the gathering that it is an “insult” for any person to propose the IMF to Ghana when the nation can discipline itself with the policy makers working hard to improve fiscal performance in Ghana.

“…if we still have this attitude towards our country and we want to be partisan in everything that we do, it will never see the light of day. Ghanaians, let’s wake up and do the right thing.”
