The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to announce its official position on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, following an internal review of the Government’s Position Paper.
The party said its own position paper had been prepared after its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee examined both the report of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) and the Government’s responses to that report.
The NPP’s announcement was made in a press release dated 28 August and signed by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Chairman of the Party’s Policy Coordinating Committee.
The party said its document would next be submitted to its Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration and adoption. Once that process has been completed, the NPP will communicate its official position to the Ghanaian public.
“As part of the national process, the Party was formally consulted and made submissions to the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) which then presented its report to Government. Subsequently, Government issued a Position Paper setting out its responses to the CRC’s recommendations,” the statement said.
The Government’s Position Paper was dated Thursday, 30 July 2026. The NPP said its review formed part of its stated commitment to decision-making that is inclusive and consultative.
“The Party’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee has undertaken a detailed review of both the CRC report and the Government’s Position Paper. The party’s committee has since prepared the NPP’s position paper following an analysis of the two documents,” the statement added.
The development comes after Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Dr Dominic Ayine inaugurated an 11-member Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) on 28 August.
The committee is chaired by Presidential Legal Counsel and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew. The statement identified the committee as part of the next stage in assessing and implementing the proposals arising from the constitutional review process.
“The Committee is tasked with examining the government’s position paper alongside the report of the Constitution Review Committee and developing a comprehensive framework for the implementation of these proposals.”
The Government also reiterated “its commitment to an inclusive and transparent constitutional review process that reflects the aspirations of the Ghanaian people and strengthens our democratic governance.”
The NPP’s forthcoming position paper is therefore expected to set out how the party views the proposed constitutional amendments after its policy committee’s analysis of the CRC’s recommendations and the Government’s formal response.
The process will require the document to receive consideration and adoption by both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NEC before the party’s position is presented to the people of Ghana. The NPP concluded its statement by confirming that it would communicate its official stance after those internal procedures had been completed.
