Ghana’s media only free on paper – Essilfie-Conduah

The media in Ghana is not totally free as its work is hinged on political paymasters who direct their activities, Professor Nana Essilfie-Conduah, Chairman of Journalism at the African University College of Communications, has said.

According to him, the media in Ghana has “volunteered to have no freedom” as the acclaimed media freedom can only be described as “paper freedom”.

The political historian bemoaned the unfairness exhibited by most media houses as they tend to align themselves to one political party or another.

He said it was time for the media to exhibit objectivity, re-strategize and be guided by the ethics of the profession.

Prof Essilfie-Conduah was speaking in an interview with Emefa Apawu on Class FM’s 505 news on Wednesday May 3, in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day.

He said it was time journalists demanded better remuneration and conditions of service as they go about their work with the highest sense of professionalism in the face of offers to remain biased.
