Ghana’s health sector highly dependent on donor support

Ghana’s health sector will collapse if donors decide to withdraw their support, an economist, Prof. Godfred Bokpin has opined.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Prof Bokpin noted that the country sets more money aside to service its debt than what is allocated to capital expenditure, which goes to prove that the “country is not preparing for tomorrow”.

He said, “we are running down our assets, we cannot maintain them, we cannot replace them so what it means is that any major capital expenditure government does, we either borrow or we do it along PPP”.

Prof Bokpin said one sector majorly affected by this is the health sector.

“Check the ministries, the level of interventions from donor partners is huge if they withdraw immediately our health system will collapse”.

He, however, added that any government that decides not borrow doesn’t know what it’s doing as the country cannot progress without borrowing.
