Ghana’s Film Industry Gears Up for Global Recognition Through New Strategic Alliance

In a significant move to reposition Ghana’s film industry on the global stage, the Screenwriters Guild of Ghana (SWGG), the Producers Guild of Ghana (PGG), and the National Film Authority (NFA) have come together to strengthen collaboration and elevate standards across the filmmaking value chain.

At the heart of the discussions was a shared commitment to creating a sustainable and competitive film ecosystem that aligns with international best practices. The NFA underscored its dedication to establishing statutory frameworks to protect intellectual property and improve the quality of storytelling in Ghanaian films.

According to the NFA, one of its top priorities is enhancing copyright protections and encouraging active collaboration with key creative guilds to ensure that local content thrives in a global market. As part of this effort, the Authority also revealed ongoing plans to secure grants for filmmakers and make it easier for foreign productions to access Ghanaian talent, equipment, and logistics.

On their part, the SWGG reiterated their interest in contributing meaningfully to such initiatives, particularly the successful Pitch Ahoy programme, which continues to support promising filmmakers and innovative film ideas.

Preparations are also underway for the National Film Dialogue, scheduled for 30th July, where crucial industry issues such as insurance for equipment and logistics will be addressed. This dialogue will feature participation from community-based film stakeholders, giving grassroots voices a platform to be heard.

During the meeting, representatives from both the SWGG and PGG stressed the importance of recognising the various industries and sectors that intersect with film production, and ensuring they are integrated and supported as the industry grows.

They also called for improved incentive packages for foreign productions to shoot in Ghana—while guaranteeing fair treatment and inclusion of local crew members.

James Gardiner, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA, captured the spirit of the collaboration, stating:

“This is not just about film—it’s about creating a legacy of professionalism and pride. When we raise the bar for storytelling, we raise the profile of Ghana itself.”

Kobbah Quaicoe, Acting Organising Secretary of the SWGG, described the alliance as a forward-thinking move, saying, “We see this collaboration with the NFA as a necessary leap forward. Standardising storytelling isn’t just about regulation—it’s about lifting the next generation of creatives onto the world stage.”

Representing the PGG, Danny Adjokatcher highlighted the need for a well-structured industry framework that benefits both international and local stakeholders:

“We must create an ecosystem that attracts foreign productions while protecting and empowering local talent. It’s time for bold, structured incentives and serious conversations about inclusion.”

Yaw F. Boakye, Acting President of the SWGG, echoed these sentiments and underlined the cultural power of Ghanaian stories:

“Storytelling is our strongest currency. By partnering with the NFA and fellow guilds, we’re ensuring that Ghanaian stories are not only told—they’re respected globally.”

This alliance marks a critical milestone in efforts to transform Ghana into a premier destination for filmmaking in Africa, where local stories are elevated with the professionalism and polish demanded by today’s global audiences.
