Ghana’s Envoy in Guinea Attacked

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has condemned the unprovoked attack on the Ambassador of Ghana to Guinea by armed elements of the Guinean security forces last week.

A statement by ECOWAS Commission expressed dismay on the assault on a diplomat in complete contravention of all accepted principles and norms regarding the obligation of governments to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic personnel.

It added that the act is repugnant and coming few weeks after the assault on Gen. Toto Camara, the Vice President of the ruling junta, and the National Council for Development and Democracy (CNDD).

“These acts, coupled with the frequent brutalities against civilians, businesses and dissenting voices, are obviously signs of the worsening state of indiscipline and impunity, as well as the absence of command and control within the security forces of Guinea” it stated. It added that there is need to restore constitutional and democratic governance in Guinea without further delay. “The Commission further urges the Guinean authorities to take appropriate steps to fish out and severely punish the perpetrators of this act in order to reassure the international community of its commitment to the rule of law and as a deterrent” it stated.

ECOWAS also urged CNDD to announce dates for the conduct of elections before the end of 2009 as agreed by all stakeholders, “so that Guinea can return to civilian rule when the rule of law and respect for human rights can be guaranteed”.
