Ghana’s educational system is in crisis – NAGRAT Secretary

Mr. Augustine Akidam, Brong-Ahafo Regional Secretary of the National Association of Graduates Teachers (NAGRAT) on Wednesday said Ghana’s educational system is in crisis and needs proactive approach to revamp it.

He however commended the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for working to ensure that teachers receive appreciable salaries and better conditions of service.

Mr. Akidam, who was addressing members of the Sunyani Municipal branch of GNAT at its fourth quadrennial delegate’s conference at Baakoniaba, near Sunyani, asked NAGRAT and GNAT to continue to put pressure on government for better salaries.

He noted that some public schools, especially those in rural areas, lacked adequate infrastructure, teaching and learning materials to ensure effective teaching and learning.

Mr. Akidam said the education should focus on helping school children to acquire knowledge, skills and appropriate attitude.

Mr. Charles B. Kala, a retired educationist, said Ghana lack a coherent system to recruit, develop and retain teachers.

He also said “the compulsory element of basic education is emphasised in the Education Act, 2008 (Act778) but nothing seemed to be happening for five years now”.

Mr. Kala said the rapid change of ministers of education negatively affect the education sector.
