Ghana’s economy will create jobs after 25 years – Kusi Boafo

Economist and former lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University, Thomas Kusi Boafo believes it will take Ghana a longer time to create jobs for the teaming unemployed youth.

In his estimation, it will take Ghana about 25 years before it can grow the economy to a level that would lead to job creation for the unemployed youth.

According to him, if there should be job creation than the economy should be managed well so that the current economic growth rate of 3.6% should record double digits and remain double for digits for several years.

“I’m afraid and I must be honest that we will need double digits growth for 5 continuous years before we can clear unemployment situation or we need 7% growth for eight or nine years.

“So I’m telling the youth today to look for jobs outside Ghana, ” he stated.

Speaking on Oman FM’s political analysis program “Boiling Point ” Mr Kusi Boafo, who is the CEO of Public Sector Reforms emphasized on the need for the country to make a deliberate effort to restore growth and confidence in the system.

He said he can only be happy if the economy record double digits growth by 2021 and beyond.

Touching on corruption which he said has bedeviled the country, Mr. Kusi Boafo charged President Nana Akufo-Addo to put stringent measures in place to make corruption very unattractive.

He explained that President Akufo-Addo’s administration cannot continue to do business as usual by failing to punish those who have engaged in corrupt acts, stressing that, such circumstances bring discouragement to the masses while it encourages the few corrupt people.

“There are three things this government should consider very seriously and that is tackling corruption, ensuring transparency and accountability. If the government is able to do these there will be what we call “buy- in” and this will translate into support from the masses to the government,” he suggested.
