Ghana’s economy is ‘wounded’ – Lecturer

Head of the Finance Department at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr. Godfred Bokpin has said Ghanaians confidence in the economy is wounded due to President Mahama’s inability to fulfill the Better Ghana Agenda policy he promised ahead of the 2012 elections.

“The confidence in the economy is wounded and trust in the government is impaired but we can only keep hope alive… since we don’t have the better Ghana right now, we can only hope for it,” he said.

Government has come under criticism for the rising budget deficit and other economic challenges facing the country.

Speaking on Citi FM’s News analysis programme, The Big Issue, Dr. Bokpin identified other challenges, saying, “Ghana after so many years of independence has been unsuccessful in undertaking a simple exercise of eliminating ghost names from the public payroll”.

He said Ghanaians can only hope that the poor economic status of the country will improve.

Several people including the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo Addo have criticised President Mahama for his inability to improve the lives of the citizenry as he[Mahama] promised.

Speaking at the launch of his campaign for the party’s presidential ticket, the two time presidential candidate said “there cannot be a better Ghana when healthcare, education systems have all broken down and the cedi is the second worst performing currency in the world.”

“There can be no better Ghana so long as the NDC remains in power. There can be no better Ghana with the current clueless and uncaring leadership”.

Government in a rebuttal, however stated in July that it is working hard to deliver the Better Ghana it promised Ghanaians ahead of the 2012 elections.
