Ghana’s EC is behaving like a criminal organization – Chairman Wontumi

On Friday 15th May, 2015, the Electoral Commission of Ghana began its registration exercise to offer persons who could not register and those who turned 18 years after the last registration exercise the chance to do that.

The EC’s decision to carry on with the exercise has been condemned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

The Ashanti Chair also known as Chairman Wontumi established that judging from the way the EC was currently operating, he could confidently liken them to a criminal organization working in the interest of the National Democratic Congress.

Despite his condemnation, the EC says the move is in accordance with Regulation 9 (1) of the Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulations 2012, (C.I 72) and has advised eligible voters to register at EC offices across the country.

But speaking to Peacefmonline.com, Chairman Wontumi revealed that majority of his party members were taken by surprise to learn about the exercise and for this reason have shifted their attention from the internal parliamentary elections to monitor the registration exercise. His reason was that “the EC cannot be trusted”.
