Kumasi, Oct 12, GNA – Nana Dwomah Sarpong, President of the Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies, an environmental NGO, has called for a concerted effort by Ghanaians to protect rivers and water bodies. He said environmental protection was a collective responsibility and there was the need for Ghanaians to support such activities. Nana Sarpong, who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Wednesday, expressed regret that people threw waste materials in rivers serving as source of drinking water to others and said water was life and there was the need to treat rivers with care. Nana Sarpong described how important rivers were to the tourism and appealed to traditional rulers and District Assemblies to enforce by-laws and customary laws that helped to protect rivers and water bodies.
He also called for the planting of trees to check erosion and land degradation in communities.
Nana Sarpong further appealed to the Town and Country Planning authorities to incorporate parks, lawns and gardens in their schemes to beautify communities.
