Professor Stephen B. Kendie, Chairman of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Council, has appealed to Ghanaians to preach and practise tolerance, and respect for self and fellow human beings.
They should maintain and sustain peaceful co-existence in the communities, to keep Ghana in the path of togetherness and development.
Prof Kendie made the appeal at the 16th Congregation of the Wa Campus of the University at Wa on Saturday, with a total of 1,848 diploma, undergraduate and graduate students congregating.
He said intolerance, disrespect and insults had become prominent features of the political landscape, which was disturbing and needed to be avoided.
“Ghanaians are noted to be courteous by nature; it is a dent on the national image if we allow our expression of differences to degenerate into insults and, even physical attacks which sometimes result in deaths,” he pointed out.
He said Ghana would be holding elections next year, and very soon, electioneering campaigns would begin, and all should bear in mind that Ghana was the only country that was “our own.”
The UDS Council’s Chairman noted that posterity would not forgive us if Ghanaians allowed parochial interests and other actions by individuals or groups to destroy “our beautiful Ghana.”
“Let us all resolve to be courteous and circumspect in our utterances, before, during and after the elections,” he stated.
Prof Kendie urged Ghanaians to be accommodating, and show respect for one another, regardless of their political differences, to help sustain the peace they were enjoying.
