Accra, Dec. 9, GNA- The Ghana Anti-corruption Coalition, a cross sectional group of independent public institution on Saturday urged Ghanaians not to remain passive victims on the effect of corruption since every individual had a role to play in the fight against corruption.
“Corruption is a developmental issue and if not attended to, Ghana will not be able to achieve the needed growth that we are aiming at,” Mrs Florence Dennis, Executive Secretary of the Coalition said at a press briefing to mark the UN Anti-corruption day which falls on December 9 every year.
She said, to sensitize the public on the need to eliminate corruption; the coalition was distributing about 4000 car stickers to commercial and private drivers in Accra.
Mrs Dennis called on development agencies to include anti-corruption in their aid programmes to prevent diverting scarce resources for other things, which would not result in development. “NGOs should be strong advocates for transparency, openness and integrity. Companies should follow ethical business practices and live up to effective accounting and auditing standards,” she advised. She noted that corruption was a multi-dimensional issue, hence the need for civil society to come together in the fight against corruption. Mrs Dennis said the Ghana Anti-corruption Coalition has worked with youth groups in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Western regions to help develop a sense of ethical behaviour among the youth. The Coalition has also developed monitoring indicators to monitor institutional corruption, she said.
Mr. Bright Blewu, General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association pledged the organisation’s commitment to support the fight against corruption in society.
