Ghanaians urged to be committed in educational policies

Tamale, Sept. 10, GNA – Alhaji Yakubu Ibrahmah, a former Municipal Chief Executive for Tamale Metropolis, has lauded the country’s public administration as one of the best in the sub-region but called for commitment among Ghanaians for the full realization of decentralization. He said decentralization was the most equitable way of distributing the national cake to all corners of the country but was beset with challenges such as conflicts, political interference, financial problems and non commitment by stakeholders.

Alhaji Ibrahmah said this on Wednesday during a one day stakeholders’ meeting of the District Educational Oversight Committee (DEOC).

The workshop was organized by Action Aid, a non-governmental organisation, for some districts to brainstorm on challenges facing the DEOC and how to redress them to improve the standard of education in those communities. Participants were selected from stakeholders in education, District Chief executives, presiding members, NGOs, Parent/Teacher association and students.

Mr. Yakubu Saani, the Programmes Manager for Action Aid, called for effective functioning of the DEOC in achieving the educational objectives at the district levels.

He also called for proper accountability and honesty among stakeholders in the discharge of duties to ensure the realization of equitable and quality educational systems in the country. The participants called for 0.5 per cent of the District Assembly’s Common Fund (DACF) to be set aside for educational purposes to improve education infrastructure and facilities for learning.

They also suggested that an experienced educationist should oversee the functions of the DEOC and to de-politicize it so that its objectives could be realized.
