Accra, Sept. 8, GNA – The Cuba Solidarity Campaign on Thursday announced that more than 1,000 Ghanaians from all walks of life had signed for the release of the detained five Cubans 93Cuban Five”.
In addition, they called for an immediate end to the economic blockade on Cuba.
“The Cuban Five” are a group of five intelligence officers convicted in Miami of conspiracy to commit espionage, murder, and other illegal activities in the United States.
Mr Kyeretwie Opoku, Member of Cuba Solidarity Campaign, said these at a press conference to draw attention to issues between the United States and Cuba as well as the nature of international political system.
He said:We will now forward these signatures to the international campaign which will ensure that they reach the United States authorities and the Cuban five” themselves who survive on the solidarity of the world’s people.”
Mr Opoku said that President John Evans Atta Mills wrote to President Obama of the United States, urging him to take steps to secure the release of the Cuban Five in the interest of justice.
Mr Opoku, flanked by Mr Kofi Attoh, Convener of Cuba Solidarity Campaign and Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Member of the group said Vice President John Mahama launched the campaign.
Some of the signatories included Professor Kofi Awoonor, Chairman of Council of State, Professor Akilagpa Sawyer, Member of Council of State and Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary-General of Ghana Trades Union Congress.
Others are Ministers of State, Parliamentarians, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, trade unionists, academicians, musicians, artists, students and workers with more people being invited to append their signatures for a worthy cause.
Mr Opoku said:The injustice of the treatment suffered by the Cuban Five is beyond reasonable doubt=85instead of the US acting against the terrorists, the authorities rather arrested them and subjected them to torture.today 13 years later the Cuban Five through demonstrably innocent remain isolated in US prisons.”
He expressed gratitude to all those who joined the campaign and urged them to join other activities aimed at securing the release of the Cuban Five from jail and end the inhuman economic blockade of Cuba by the US.
Mr Pratt Jnr who is also the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper stressed the unjust nature of international political system and called on Ghanaians to support them to fight a worthy cause against injustice.
