Ghanaians don’t fear the police – Nunoo-Mensah

Two-time Chief of Defense Staff Brig. Gen. (rtd) Joseph Nunoo-Mensah believes it will take the army to restore discipline in Ghana because Ghanaians have lost respect for the police.

According to the former National Security Advisor, the police service has lost it when it comes to commanding respect and “it is time to define new roles for the military” to be involved in all activities.

Nunoo-Mensah noted the military can no longer be confined to the barracks and since “they are the most disciplined personalities” in Ghana, they can help restore confidence.

“Let me state that the definition of the army has changed the world…there will be no third world war for the soldiers to constantly stationed at the Barracks waiting for a war that will never happen,” Nunoo-Mensah told Accra-based Atinka FM.

“We need to define a new role for the soldiers because they are the most disciplined personalities in the nation now because of the kind of training they pass through and so they should be part of national reconstruction.”

He added: “Nobody is afraid of the police in Ghana, nobody is frightened by the sight of a policeman and so when they are directing traffic you see drivers crossing even when there’s a red light.

“These policemen are taking bribes on the road and you want people to respect them. The society is sick, it is time to define new roles for the military so they come out and be involved in all activities aimed at nation building and until that, we will continue to get rotten.”
