Ghanaians Are Not Fools – Obed Asamoah

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that Ghanaians are not ‘fools’ and that since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has not been able to fulfil the big promises it made during the 2000 election, “voters are likely to throw them out at the next elections.”

He was also of the view that the founder of the party, ex-President Jerry Rawlings, “is entitled to his opinion since we all need not think alike.” The Chairman of the NDC, Dr Obed Asamoah made these views known during an interview earlier this week on GTV’s Breakfast Show. Voter Alienation

On what the NDC has gained from being in opposition for almost two years, Dr Asamoah had no doubts, “I think being in opposition has helped the party appreciate that you need to be conscious when you are in government of what you are doing, so that you do not do things that will alienate the voter. For example, the way the present government is was backing any of the candidates likely to contest for the NDC’s flagbearership slot but added, “I may have my own ideas as to who can lead us better.”

On whether the NDC was broke, the 66-year-old lawyer said “the party does not have all the resources it needs and I think this applies to all parties. Really, my experience is that no party ever has all resources they need for what they would want to do. It is true that we could do with a lot more resources than we have at the moment. However, like everything else, we have got to work at ensuring that our programmes do not suffer from that and we would therefore be working hard to get resources for the success of our campaign.”
