Ghanaians are fed up with military rule – CJ

Accra, Jan 13, GNA – Mr Justice George Kingsley Acquah, Chief Justice (CJ), said on Tuesday that Ghanaians were fed up with military rule.

For this reason, he said, institutions championing the cause of Democracy should intensify their sensitisation programmes to create the necessary awareness among the people, to ensure that the tenets of democratic governance were firmly entrenched in the society. Mr Justice Acquah made the remark when he swore into office Mrs Augustina Akosua Akumaning the newly appointed Deputy Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

He reminded democratic institutions in the country that they would be doing a great disservice to the good people of Ghana if they did not educate them on their constitutional responsibilities. The CJ pointed out that Ghanaians would do everything in their power to resist military interventions if only those democratic institutions carried across to them the right message on constitutional rule.

He congratulated the Deputy Chairman on her appointment and expressed the hope she would bring her expertise and knowledge to bear on the Commission’s role in ensuring that the nation’s democratic dispensation succeeded.

Mrs Akumaning said she was grateful to President John Agyekum Kufuor for appointing her to the high office adding that she would do her best to justify the confidence reposed in her. The President appoints Members of the Commission acting on the advice of the Council of State and they should be qualified to be elected as Members of Parliament and must not hold office in any political party.
