“Pension payment reviewed.. Banks to pay without SSNIT advice”, says the lead headline of the Times. The paper reports that to overcome problems of pension payments, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has requested the banks to pay pensioners on the third Thursday of every month, with effect from this year. Mr Sylvester Anko-bil, the Tamale District Manager of SSNIT, who is reported to have announced this at Tamale, explained that by the directive, the banks would not wait for payment advice from SSNIT before effecting payments as was the case. Mr Ank-bil said since 1991, payment of pensions had been decentralised with the opening of 44 district offices alongside 12 regional offices. He said there are plans by SSNIT to open more branch offices to further enhance the processing and payment of pensions.
