The Times in its main front page story reports that the Unit Committee Elections will be held in December, this year by the Electoral Commission. Mr David Adenze Kanga, Deputy Chairman (Operations) of the Commission who disclosed this to the Times in Accra yesterday, said preparations for the polls are far advanced. According to the Times Mr Kanga explained that the Constitutional Instrument 17 on Public Elections Regulations (Unit Committees) is before Parliament and it is likely to be passed into law later this month. The law on the conduct of the elections stipulates that public elections must be held at least within 30 days or not more than 90 days after the Commission is given the go ahead to do so. GRI
“CSM catches health workers unawares”, is the headline of another front page story in the Times. The story says the Minister of Health, Dr Eunice Brookman- Amissah, yesterday expressed dissatisfaction that in spite of measures by the ministry to detect suspected cases of Cerebro-Spinal Menigitis (CSM) on time, the incidence of the disease this year, was reported outside the ministry. She said that should not be the case and asked health personnel, particularly those in areas prone to the disease, to intensify their efforts at the detection of the disease and its management. GRI
In a back page story, the Times reports that the Wenchi District Chief Executive, Mr D.D. Domfeh has said the assembly is spending too much on violence and conflicts among feuding Muslim sects in the district. “Muslims should now be careful not to commit any acts likely to bring about the breach of the peace in the district”, the Times quoted Mr Domfeh as telling the second ordinary meeting of the Wenchi District Assembly on Friday.
