The Times reports on its front page that four chiefs and eight others, mainly elders of the royal families of six communities near Kumasi, are helping the Ashanti Regional Police in their investigations into the massive encroachment on lands in the Owabi Dam catchment area. In its main story headlined: “Four chiefs assist police…Over encroachment on Owabi Dam area”, the Times says a large army of illegal developers are said to have invaded and plundered more than half of the 3,804- acre catchment area of the dam which together with the Barekese Dam provide the water requirements of residents of Kumasi and its environs. “September 24, ultimatum for tax dodgers”, is the headline of another Times front page story which says tax defaulters have been given up to Wednesday, September 24, to pay up or face punitive action. The warning was issued jointly by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) at a news conference in Accra yesterday to brief newsmen on measures being taken by the two bodies to improve revenue collection in the country and to remind the public of their tax obligations. The Times says the names of individuals and organisations who fail to comply with the directive will be published in the newspapers. GRI
The Times reports on its back page that the University of Ghana yesterday declared that refrigerators are not permitted for use in students’ rooms. The Times says a press release signed yesterday in Accra by the Senior Assistant Registrar, Mr. T.A, Ofori-Mante, said” gas cookers and cylinders are also not allowed in the main halls and annexes. The statement said porters have been authorised to stop students from taking prohibited items to the main halls and annexes. GRI
