Mr. Mark Amoako Dompreh, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, has commended Ghanaian teachers for their efforts to provide quality education towards national development.
He said the teachers over the three and-a-half years had worked hard to improve the skills and knowledge of the youth, to enable them to contribute to the government’s Better Ghana Agenda.
Mr. Amoako Dompreh made the commendation in a speech he read on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Victor Smith, at the Best Teacher/Non-teaching staff awards (for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) at Nsawam.
It was organized on the theme; “Teacher Discipline and Hard work – A Prerequisite for Improved Performance.”
Mr. Amoako Dompreh said the government in fulfilling its promise to give the people quality education had built more than 1,326 six-unit classroom blocks across the country.
He said the government has also distributed 42.2 million exercise books to school children free of charge in the country and increased the Capitation Grant by 50 per cent.
Mr. Dompreh said: “today, every public school pupil receives GHc4.50 against the previous GHc3.00. Government has doled out three million school uniforms to needy pupils nationwide. This implies that out of the basic school population of about 5.2 million, three out of every five school children have been supplied free school uniforms.”
The MCE said the School Feeding Programme was undergoing expansion and transformation and said; “today, it covers 1.4 million school children and Ghana no longer goes out begging for funding for the programme.”
Mr. Amoako Dompreh said the government has completed more than 300 classroom blocks and dormitories to ease the over-crowding of Senior High Schools (SHS) as a result of the extension of the SHS duration from three to four years.
He gave the assurance that teachers in deprived areas of the country would be given special allowances very soon in recognition of their sacrifices.
Mr. Osei Bonsu Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Aburi, appealed to government to build teachers’ quarters and bungalows in the deprived areas to promote teaching and learning.
Mrs. Stella Nannor, the Municipal Director of Education, commended teachers in the area for working hard to improve the Basic Education Certificate Education and the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations.
She said the municipality was first in the 2012 Second-cycle Inter-District Festival of Arts held at Suhum, and 11 schools were selected to participate in the Regional Sports Festival in Takoradi next month.
In all 46 teachers and non-teaching staff were awarded with electrical gadgets and certificates.
