Ghanaian leaders should be accountable to the people- Moderator

Kumasi, July 21, GNA – A pastor has appealed to public office holders to display a high sense of patriotism and discipline in the performance of their duties.

The Right Reverend Dr. Yaw Frimpong-Manso, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, said public office holders should be transparent, accountable and ensure the judicious use of state resources.

He was speaking at a thanksgiving service to round off centenary celebration of the Ramseyer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Kumasi. The Rt Rev. Dr. Frimpong-Manso expressed dissatisfaction at the poverty levels of Ghanaians, saying this was unacceptable looking at the nation’s rich natural and human resources.

“Misappropriation of state resources is to blame for the sad situation,” he said and added that it would be difficult for the nation to achieve its development goals if office holders continued to be greedy and selfish.

The Rt Rev. Dr. Frimpong-Manso said the time had come for leaders in whatever position to be God-fearing, show compassion and lead exemplary lives.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in a message commended the Presbyterian Church for being development-oriented. He said in the face of growing indiscipline in the society, it was the responsibility of the church to partner government to restore sanity. Otumfuo Osei Tutu said it was his hope that the church would continue to pursue its tradition of promoting discipline among the youth to enable them to make good use of their God-given talents. Mr. Kofi Opoku-Manu, Ashanti Regional Minister, in a speech delivered on his behalf, appealed to church leaders to use the pulpit to sensitize their members on their civic responsibilities so as to contribute effectively to national development.
