Ghanaian deportees must be properly reintegrated – Group

Government has been asked to put in place a better re-integration program for the over 80 Ghanaians who were deported from Libya.

The deportees who were illegally residing in Libya arrived at the Kotoka International Airport Thursday night to go through immigration procedures.

Looking weary they claimed they were imprisoned for over eight months by Libyan officials prior to their deportation. In April, some 300 Ghanaians residing in the North African country came home voluntarily. Many of them traveled to Libya on foot through the Libyan Desert to seek greener pastures.

Calling for a proper re-integration of them into society, the Corporate Affairs Officer for the Returnees Diaspora Integrated Development Organization, Ganiru Alhassan said the country is faced with migration policy crisis which is hampering efforts to reintegrate the deportees.

“We are in a situation where we cannot even have a clear data of who migrated and of who comes in and in a case of unauthorized or undocumented migration you can’t even trace it and that is the difficulty,” he told Starr Midday News’ Kwaku Obeng Adjei Friday July 28, 2017.

He said since 2011 over 40,000 migrants returned from Libya and it is difficulty reintegrating them in the system without proper government policy.

As a result, he said his group is collaborating with government to “push some of these guys into the already social set up like the youth employment…but unfortunately most of these programs are not for starters.”
