Ghanaian Community Engagement in Toronto

By Daniel Sem

Under the auspices of Across Boundaries, the Ghanaians Speak made a presentation on Mental Health Awareness to two Ghanaian community groups in Toronto, Ontario last weekend. The first one was held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Trinity Baptist Church (800 Arrow Road). About 12 to 15 people attended this presentation.

The second presentation took place on Sunday, May 26, 2013 from 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm at the Ga-Adangbe Cultural group meeting at the Centennial Community Centre (Bathurst & Finch Avenue West), Toronto. There were about 45 -50 people who were seated for this presentation.

That Ghanaians are now more open to talk about mental health, addictions and its ramifications is evidenced by the way the presenters were received and interacted with during this forum. The audience stated that they learned great lessons. “I have learned about the signs and symptoms that constitute mental illness”; Mental health can affect anyone”; “I know there is help out there” are some of the statements made by participants of the forum. The participants had time for questions and answers while enjoying their light refreshment.

The people appealed to Across Boundaries to intensify its Community Engagement work in the Ghanaian community by reaching out to more churches, cultural groups, and other social units within the Greater Toronto Area.

We thank Belinda, Mr. Eyiah Nana Boat for their presence and support during this busy period. We also thank all the Ghanaians Speak members who have been supportive in many different ways to this community Engagement project. Keep the good work and be blessed.
