A Ghanaian, who entered Guyana illegally, Henry Vanderpuye, faces deportation after being fined for the crime.
The 37-year-old Ghanaian national was fined $30,000 after being arraigned with an illegal entry charge before a magistrate court at Georgetown on Monday.
Vanderpuye pleaded guilty to entering Guyana by sea on November 29, at Springlands, Corentyne, without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
“I am very sorry, it will never happen again,” Vanderpuye pleaded before Magistrate Ann McLennan before the verdict was read out to him.
According to the Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones, Vanderpuye, who is a trader by profession, arrived in Guyana by means of boat but failed to present himself to an immigration officer. He further explained that the Police conducted a raid on December 13, in Dennis Street and found the defendant.
He was asked to produce his documents, which he failed to do, and further investigation was conducted hence the present offence.
The West African, who claimed he recently moved in Suriname, will remain in Police custody and risks deportation.
