The 2012 presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom has reiterated his call that leaders of the various political parties should be held responsible for acts of violence perpetrated by their followers.
The call by the business magnate, has however, been mocked by the general secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
“The nation will be an interesting place to live in under Paa Kwesi Nduom’s Presidency if that’s the way he thinks.
“That when an adult citizen commits an offence you go look for the parent and punish him and leave the person, what about people who have lost their parents?
“I don’t agree with his mode of punishment but I entirely agree with the suggestion that people who commit electoral offences ought to be punished and a citizen after 18 years ought to be held responsible for his or her own conduct. So it shouldn’t be necessarily visited on the party,” General Mosquito, as Nketia is popularly, told Starr News’ Ibrahim Alhassan.
But in response, Dr. Nduom said the reaction of the NDC general secretary to his comments is an indication of the rot in the Ghanaian society.
“The reaction of the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia to my call for Ghanaians to hold the leadership of political parties accountable to the violent acts of their members is a true indication of the rot Ghana finds itself in. Indeed, I wish to confirm to Mr. Nketsia that he is right that Ghana will be an interesting place to live under my leadership.
“It has been reported that Mr. Nketia has said that when an adult citizen commits an offense you should not go and look for the parent and punish him and leave the person. He knows that in Ghana some leaders pretend that they do not know that their followers are intimidating others, committing acts of violence or raising funds through illegal means.
“He knows exactly what I am talking about. And I mean what I am saying. Acts of indiscipline have become synonymous with politics and by extension with being in government. An administration led by me will not tolerate this. I will lead my party with discipline, self-control and love for country. Others must do the same,” the PPP founder wrote in a statement copied to StarrFMonline.com.
