Ghana Water Company to pilot electro chlorination

The Ghana Water Company Limited in partnership with Intermeric Ghana limited is set to pilot an electro chlorination project.

The electro chlorination project is the use of common salt, water and electricity as an alternative to chlorine gas used in the treatment of water.

At a conference held to discuss the benefits of electro chlorination, Senior Engineer for Evoqua water technology, Ing. Michael Amankwah stated that the introduction of the electro chlorination will reduce the cost of production of water for consumption and also reduce health risk.

“Ghana is one of the countries that manufacture salt in a measurable quantity in West Africa, the introduction of this electro chlorination will prevent Ghana from spending huge sums of money used to import chlorine gas from India and China to disinfect water for consumption. When we start, local salt manufacturers will be given the specifications of which the machines requires to enable them to meet the salt production standard for the machine.”

The piloting is expected to take place at Kpone and Weija for six months and two personnel from each location will be sent to Germany for training so they can acquire skills for the maintenance of the equipment.

Managing Director for Ghana Water Company Limited Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah added that the project will also create jobs for Ghanaians and reduce cost.

“This project is going to create a lot of job for Ghanaians and also benefit the country at large. Our aim is to reduce cost if cost is reduced our tariffs will also reduce. Let’s hope that this piloting becomes successful.”

The project has so far been presented to the Public Procurement Authority awaiting approval for its commencement.
