Ghana to use Cwealth membership to spread respect for humanity

Accra, Oct. 20 GNA – Ghana would use the opportunity of its membership of the Commonwealth to promote and spread respect for humanity, President John Agyekum Kufuor has declared. He said the Commonwealth was the pacesetter of the globalisation idea – “a world of peoples co-existing in happiness”. President Kufuor said this when he received a delegation of Commonwealth Law Ministers, attending a four-day meeting in Accra, at the Castle, Osu, on Thursday.

He said law was a necessary cornerstone to the development of the State and should engender enlightenment anywhere adding that it was in the light of this that the importance of the Law Ministers’ meeting should be appreciated.

President Kufuor observed that the world was in great difficulties in dealing with clever criminality and mentioned money laundering and terrorism and said it was gratifying that the Ministers discussed them. He said he was also happy that issues bordering on fair international trade engaged their attention as this was crucial to countries like Ghana that were striving to pull themselves from economic stagnation.

He said the country would avail itself of the report of the Meeting and work with it.

Mr Bart D. Frank, Law Minister of the Islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis, who acted as Spokesman of delegation, said the meeting covered 35 papers dealing with relevant international issues. He said they renewed their commitment in the context of their common heritage and resolved to put their common experiences and heritage to improve the welfare of their peoples. He praised the Government for the arrangement and conduct of the meeting, which, he said, was second to none. He thanked President Kufuor and the people of Ghana for the warm reception accorded them.
