Ghana to strengthen bilateral relations with Germany

Mr Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, on Monday reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthen bilateral relations with Germany.

He said Germany has assisted Ghana in many areas of economic and infrastructural development, but that the nation still needs more assistance from elsewhere.

Mr Oppong-Fosu made the remarks when Mr Rudiger John, German Ambassador in Ghana, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra.

He noted that the major factors that are needed for the development of the country are technical support and experienced personnel, and that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is collaborating with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), a German Society for International Cooperation in that regard.

Mr Oppong-Fosu said the collaboration will ensure active performance under the decentralization reforms in order to empower local communities, adding, “I hope the developing partners will keep their support to attain a fruitful project”.

Mr John said Germany still opens its arms to Ghana in relation to developing the country under the decentralization reform.

He said Germany’s relationship with Ghana is to promote development in the country through technical and financial co-operation, and to also support communities through training.

Mr. John stated that Germany’s hope in the cooperation is to strengthen the economic status of the country, adding that, “Government should bring out the major problems so we can look through and assist in developing the country.”

He said communal training sessions will be held to build capacity, as well as bring about new job creations in order to promote development in the country.
