Mombasa, Kenya (PANA) – Ghana’s foreign minister, Victor Gbeho, said President Jerry Rawlings was considering re-opening the country’s mission in Kenya to enhance the strong relations between the two states, the Kenya News Agency reported Tuesday.
It said the minister announced the move in Mombasa Monday night on behalf of Rawlings, who made a brief stop-over at Moi International Airport while enroute to Brunei.
Rawlings urged Kenya to open a similar mission in Accra so as to further cement the relations.
He said both countries enjoy strong historical relationships dating back to the 1940s.
“It is through the late Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana that political and freedom movements were started and sustained in Africa,” Rawlings cited.
He suggested that the two states should start trade relations to boost their economies.
“For Ghana and Kenya, we are partners in development. Following the liberalisation in the globe, we should even boost further our excellent relationships,” he observed.
He explained that economic hardships in the 1980s and 1990s forced Ghana to close its mission in Nairobi.
“We still have a lot of assets in Nairobi and in future we will re-open our offices,” Rawlings added.
