The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development together with Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology would soon introduce separation of wastes to make it easier for recycling and disposal of refuse.
The pilot project would be rolled out in the Ministries and in time extended to schools, universities and households.
It would have colour-coded waste bins which would contain the separated waste materials (plastics and organic materials).
Ms Sherry Ayittey, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, announced this on Wednesday when she commissioned trucks, tricycles, litter bins and thin film plastics that was donated to the two ministries to aid in plastic waste management.
The donation was made by Accra Plastic Waste Management Project, National Association of Packaged and Sachet Water Producers, Pure and Iced Water Sellers Association and Ghana Journalists Association.
Ms Ayittey asked the Accra Metropolitan Authorities to direct traders and sellers to tidy up the areas they apply their businesses.
She called for attitudinal change towards creating a clean and healthy environment adding: “What we need now as a country is a more systematic, pragmatic and complete paradigm shift from our current waste management policies and practices.”
