An international neuro centre to handle brain related diseases is to be established at the Narh-Bita hospital at Tema. The multi-million dollar international neuro centre is being jointly funded by Narh-Bita hospital and Neuro Ghana, a non- governmental organization (NGO), headed by Nii Bonney Andrews, Dr. Henry Lawson, director of administration at the Narh-Bita hospital told the Chronicle in an interview at his office last Wednesday.
According to Dr Lawson, the neuro centre, when fully completed, would be the third in Africa. Egypt and South Africa are the only countries which have neuro centres on the continent.
He said the Tema Neuro Centre will be equipped with high-technology gadgets for performing brain surgery and other related brain diseases. Presently brain operations are performed through the normal opening of the head.
Dr. Lawson stated that a South African manufacturing firm, Sofamor Dande, which produces surgical instruments and “high-tech” equipment will handle equipment supplies to the centre. The centre is expected to serve the West African sub-region.
This project sis currently a boost to health delivery in the country. Like the Cardio Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, the neuro centre will help reduce government budget on health finance externally as well as raise foreign currency for the nation.
Chronicle further learnt from Dr. Lawson that the West African College of Physicians has recommended the Narh-Bita hospital for accreditation for post-graduate programmes in General Medical Practice (GMP). According to Dr. Lawson, the programme, started in 1998 is designed to assist general medical practitioners to improve the quality of service to the public.
