… As Dan Lartey Vows To Unseat Mills
Though Daniel Lartey, the disqualified flagbearer of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) in the December 2008 election, would be 86 years old in 2012; he has vowed to campaign vigorously to unseat President John Evans Atta Mills to form the next government. The GCPP leader minced no words in declaring his intention to contest the 2012 presidential election: “The country is looking forward for Domestication to domesticate the economy; that is why the GCPP is favoured to win the elections in 2012.
I will not have any problem with the electoral Commission (EC) this time.” The oldest man in the presidential race under the Fourth republic had these words for those who think it was time for him to take a rest to pave the way for the younger generation; “I could be 90 or 100 years old, but I will still contest (the presidential election), once my mind is sharp.”
He followed with a self-appraisal; “As at now, I have the ability to run the government, nobody has been able to correct the wrongs of the nation, if the young ones cannot do it; I will come and do it.” He was granting The Heritage an exclusive interview yesterday.
The octogenarian lashed at the two major parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for not living up to the expectation of Ghanaians throughout the 16 years of constitutional rule and described them as having failed the nation. He said Ghanaians would soon throw away the two major parties and look for a party that would be able to seek their interests and the change the misfortune of the country into fortune. “The whole thing now relies on domestication.”
Touching on the performance of the first 100 days of the Prof Mills-led NDC administration, Uncle Lartey said, “Whatever the president said he would do in the first 100 days, he has done it.”
Asked whether he would accept any position from the NDC, he said, “I will not accept any position from the NDC, I am working my party to win the 2012general election.”
He was further unhappy with what he described as the focus of the government, charging that the snatching of cars that has become rampant recently is not what the president has been asked to do. He said, in order to create wealth and jobs for Ghanaians, Prof Mills needs to focus on the economy, security and corruption fighting.
The disqualified presidential hopeful chastised former President John Agyekum Kufuor for taking home some state vehicles. “Kufuor should not have taken home state cars in the first place, that was self-inclination,” was the verdict of Dan Lartey. The flagbearer and owner of the GCPP further disclosed that he is looking forward to beating convincingly whoever wishes to come up against him for the flagbearer position for the 2012 election, as the party has now elected a chairman.
