Ghana to evacuate citizens from Iran – Ablakwa

The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has announced plans to evacuate citizens from Iran amidst the deepening conflict with Israel.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development in a social media post, citing the protection of Ghanaian lives as the primary motivation.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Ablakwa stated.

He explained that the evacuation operation, which will be carried out through Iran’s land borders, covers all Ghanaian nationals in the country, including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.

Mr. Ablakwa stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of every Ghanaian, regardless of their location.

He also noted that the government is closely monitoring developments in Israel and will provide guidance in due course.

The minister also revealed that Ghana’s embassy in Tehran had been closed with immediate effect to guarantee the safety of diplomatic staff.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he added.

Reaffirming Ghana’s call for diplomacy, Mr. Ablakwa urged Iran and Israel to end hostilities and prioritise peaceful resolution.
