Ghana to be guinea worm free country

The Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Guinea worm Eradication Programme (GWEP), Mr Adu Inkumsa says Ghana is at the verge of being a guinea worm- free country.

Mr Nkumsah, who is also the Regional Chief Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, made this known in an interview with Ghana News Agency in Koforidua at the weekend.

He said Ghana is at the moment expecting a certificate from the World Health Organisation to confirm that the country is a guinea worm free.

Mr Inkumsa said the last guinea worm case was reported in April and ever since there has not been any reported case.

He said GWEP is creating awareness through a programme called Stop Transmission of Guinea worm, (STOG), which aims at visiting health facilities in the region to check whether their guinea worm records are up to date.

He said STOG is working hand in hand with Ghana Education Service, to be able to create awareness in schools.

Mr Inkumsah urged anybody who sees a white hanging worm coming out from any part of the body should report to the nearest health worker or facility for a cash reward of Ghc 200.00.
