Accra, June 5, GNA – The United Nations Campaign Torch to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) would be handed over to Ghana on June 10 as affirmation of the nation’s commitment to gender equity and empowerment of women. Nana Oye Lithur, Africa Regional Coordinator of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, an international non-governmental organisation mandated to promote human rights in the Commonwealth states, is billed to receive the torch in Ghana.
Nana Oye, a gender torchbearer in Ghana, will then pledge a commitment to “do something extra,” regarding gender equality and economic empowerment of women.
In an interview with Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday, she said the Danish Government had decided to champion the MDG number 3, which is to promote gender equality and empower women, with particular emphasis on women’s economic empowerment, using the torch campaign. The Torch Campaign involves the passing of a torch of commitment from Copenhagen, where the Campaign was originally launched on March 7, to different parts of the world.
