Ghana’s Black Stars bounced back in style to secure third place in the 2025 Unity Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.
The resounding win came after a narrow 2-1 defeat to rivals Nigeria, and was led by an inspired performance from team captain Jordan Ayew, who scored one and assisted two in just 60 minutes on the pitch.
Ayew, 33, opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a trademark left-footed curler after dancing past his marker with a neat piece of footwork. His energy and vision dictated much of Ghana’s attacking play throughout the first half.
Defender Razak Simpson, who came under criticism for his performance against Nigeria, made amends by rising highest to nod home Ghana’s second goal from an Ayew-delivered corner. Moments later, the Nations FC centre-back sparked the move for the third goal with an incisive pass from the back.
The ball found 19-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi, who linked up brilliantly with Ayew to tee up Mohammed Fuseini for a clinical finish.
Lawrence Agyekum capped the rout with a stroke of fortune, as his looping cross from the right flank was mishandled by Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Jabari St. Hillaire, sailing into the net for Ghana’s fourth.
The Unity Cup, a four-nation invitational tournament aimed at promoting African-Caribbean unity, has seen competitive action between Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
While Ghana may not have reached the final, Saturday’s dominant display restored confidence in the squad and pleased local supporters.
“This was about pride, about bouncing back, and the boys delivered,” said head coach Otto Addo after the match. “We’re building something strong here, and today showed what this team is capable of.”
The win also showcased the blend of youth and experience in the squad, with rising talents like Yirenkyi stepping up on a big stage alongside veterans like Ayew.
With qualification matches for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon, Ghana’s strong finish in the Unity Cup provides a timely boost in momentum and belief.
